How to find a contractor without getting ripped off

Most people find a contractor by asking around. If you just moved, rent, or are handling it for a parent, you may not have anyone to ask. Here's how to do it right anyway.

Check the license

In New York City, plumbers and electricians are licensed by the Department of Buildings, and home improvement contractors by the city's consumer protection agency. Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester license home improvement contractors at the county level. Ask for the number and look it up on the agency's website.

Ask for proof of insurance

A real contractor can send a certificate of insurance the same day. If they stall, move on.

Get it in writing

Scope, price, start date and what happens if they find more work. A text message counts. A handshake doesn't.

Pay safely

Walk the job before you pay

Look at the work with the pro standing there. Run the water, flip the switch, check the cleanup. This one habit prevents most disputes.

Common questions

How much deposit is normal?

For small repairs, none. For bigger jobs, enough to cover materials is reasonable. Be wary of anyone asking for half or more in cash.

What if I'm booking for an elderly parent?

Be on the phone or get the scope and price sent to you before work starts, and make sure they know not to pay cash at the door.

Know the price before they knock.

Snap a photo, see a fair upfront price, and book a licensed, rated pro. Level is launching across New York City and the tri-state area.
